Fiona Gao, Human Resources Manager – China, plays a vital role for Beam Suntory China, where we’ve set a Yatte Minahare ambition to reach $1 billion in sales by 2030.
Born and raised in China, Fiona lived in Shenyang and Shanghai before attending SIM Global Education in Singapore, where she was able to take courses from the London School of Economics remotely. She felt economics could strengthen her ability to think logically and understand problems from a macro and micro perspective.
After school, Fiona joined Grant Thornton in 2007 as an internal auditor and worked closely with human resources.
“My personality helped draw my interest to HR,” said Fiona. “I like talking to people and I find it easy for me to get along with others.”
Fiona joined Suntory Food & Beverage (SBFA) in 2012. She then transitioned to Suntory Holdings in China to take on a role in HR. Following the acquisition of Beam and Suntory, she transitioned to her current role at Beam Suntory.
In her current role, Fiona is a champion for Growing for Good. She is leading a year-long CSR program to protect underground water in inner Mongolia, by supporting the farming of millet, which is a sustainable grain.
“The program helps support a Millet Planting Program to preserve underground water in the desert area of Inner Mongolia and the millet yield from this project will then be donated to the elderly and children in need in Shanghai,” said Fiona.
When the millet was ready to harvest, Fiona organized an employee volunteering event in Inner Mongolia to understand the process of planting and harvesting millet, as well as to deliver donation of millet and held activities with the local disadvantage groups in Shanghai communities.
Fiona also played an integral role in establishing Beam Suntory China.
“Our route-to-market launch in 2017 was a yearlong process for Beam Suntory China,” said Fiona. “My primary responsibility was to help our employees’ transition to the new business as smoothly as possible. I also helped lead recruiting, hiring and development efforts for new employees.”
Beam Suntory China started with 35 employees. With the help of Fiona’s experience and expertise, we now have 106 team members. Additionally, since the integration of the Japan and China regions, Fiona has shared the work she does for China with the Japan office, which does not have a Beam Suntory HR employee.
“I really enjoy talent acquisition and development. It makes my role feel very meaningful and valuable to the organization.”
And the China team seems to agree!
In 2019, Beam Suntory China was named a “Best Workplace,” winning three awards by Great Place to Work®. Employee engagement surveys have consistently scored at or above 93 percent the past three years; two surveys were conducted internally, each scoring 93 percent. This year, Beam Suntory China participated in The Great Place to Work, and they conducted the survey for the office, scoring 94 percent.
Outside of work, Fiona’s interests mostly include travel. Among the places she has visited, she especially enjoyed visiting Boston for its architecture and many universities, including Harvard and MIT. She also likes to watch movies, her favorites being “Terminal” and “Up In the Air.”
Alberto Lozano, Directs & Plant Integration Manager – Global Procurement, will embark on an ambitious Yatte Minahare challenge, inspired by our parent company Suntory’s “Yatte Minahare!” spirit of dreaming big, to run several of the biggest marathons in the world – Berlin, London, Boston, New York City and Chicago – in the same calendar year, completing each marathon in less than three hours.
With support from the International Region, Alberto is raising funds to support SEO Birdlife, Spain’s leading ornithological society. Alberto loves walking in the mountains and watching birds, and so he’s proud to support an organization that supports them and their natural habitats.
“Every day, I strive to improve myself and have a positive impact those around me,” Alberto said. “By taking on this Yatte Minahare challenge, I can also benefit a great organization with a cause I am passionate about.”
A Madrid native, Alberto joined Beam Suntory in June 2018. As a Procurement Manager for Spain, he is responsible for international project coordination. Currently, he is working on global sustainability for procurement with suppliers, as well as a project with Suntory over a platform called Sedex, designed to regulate child labor among suppliers. Although he’s based in Madrid, he works closely with the Segovia team.
“I really enjoy working at Beam because of the energy of the people and the dynamism of the company,” Alberto said. “I feel as though I have full support of the company in my pursuit to achieve this goal.”
Since graduating from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in 2011, Alberto has extensive work experience in both engineering and procurement, including a stint in Mexico supporting construction of an electrical power plant.
“To this point, working in Mexico was the most amazing experience in my life,” said Alberto. “I was able to fully immerse in another society and culture. I also had to work beyond even what I thought I was capable of to adapt to the role as a team manager.”
Alberto has always enjoyed sports and fitness. Growing up, he played football, and rugby at university though he’s always felt a sense of freedom while running.
“I’m really looking forward to crossing the finish line at the New York City Marathon with my arms raised and crying with joy,” Alberto said. “This Yatte Minahare challenge is a dream. I never imagined it was possible. I am determined to represent myself and Beam Suntory well.”
Alberto likes to spend his free time travelling, watching movies and TV series, snowboarding and alpinism, or mountain climbing.

18th December 2019: Beam Suntory, the global premium spirits company, has launched a range of four premium spirits in India, signaling its commitment and strategy to grow in India in line with its ambition to reach USD 1 billion in revenue by 2030. The highlight of the launch is the introduction of Oaksmith® Indian whisky - created by world-renowned blender Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender, Suntory - using traditional Japanese craftsmanship, blended with the finest Scotch Malt whiskies and American Bourbons to make a whisky unique and authentic to Indian taste. In addition, the iconic Japanese whiskies Yamazaki® Distiller’s Reserve and Hibiki® Japanese Harmony, along with Roku® Japanese Craft gin have also been launched from The House of Suntory portfolio.
The launch of Oaksmith® and Oaksmith® Gold whisky in India is key to Beam Suntory’s growth strategy and signifies the importance of India to the company. Along with the introduction of Yamazaki®, Hibiki® and Roku®, it reinforces the company’s commitment to lead the growth and premiumisation of the Indian spirits market.
The launch event of The House of Suntory was graced by Shinji Fukuyo, world-renowned Chief Blender at Suntory, the creator of the luxury and iconic blends of Hibiki® and Yamazaki® whiskies, and Neeraj Kumar, Managing Director of Beam Suntory India, along with George Kumekawa, Representative, The House of Suntory. The event highlighted the exceptional legacy of The House of Suntory, the art of making delicate whiskies, and the importance of India for Beam Suntory globally. The House of Suntory brands are being launched across all major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
We are thrilled by the appreciation that Hibiki® and Yamazaki® have received from consumers worldwide, and their popularity among spirits aficionados in India. The growing premiumisation of the Indian market and the appreciation for finely crafted spirits made this the right time to launch these brands, along with Roku® gin. Indians today are well-travelled and exposed to global trends, which inspired the creation of Oaksmith® for whisky lovers in India,” says Neeraj Kumar, Managing Director of Beam Suntory India. On Oaksmith® and Oaksmith® Gold, he said, “The beautiful blend incorporates years of tradition that the Beam Suntory family upholds while showcasing Shinji-san’s award-winning blending capabilities making it a whisky that, quite simply, no one else could possibly create.
Oaksmith® is a celebration of mastery and global collaboration, combining the best of East and West in a bottle. Blended by Shinji Fukuyo himself, Oaksmith® is a harmonious blend of matured Scotch Malts that adds a strong flavour profile & American Bourbon whiskey, aged for at least four years in American Oak barrels which lends it an unmatched smoothness. That gives the brand its unique name and also inspires the round bottle labels celebrating its distinctive craftsmanship. Befitting the unique and distinct flavour palate, the exquisite six-sided bottle with beveled edges and a tall neck has an equally unique and ergonomic design that is an ode to the finest Japanese craftsmanship and makes it stand tall in this category. The company is celebrating its international pedigree with the use of the world map in all its creative expressions.
Much like The House of Suntory, Oaksmith® blend is made using the finest ingredients and sincerity of process that is a hallmark of Beam Suntory’s Japanese heritage which is unique to this brand in the entire Indian whisky category. From seed to sip, the whisky is meticulously crafted to achieve a blend like no other resulting in a bold spirit that is rich on the nose yet approachable and well-balanced on one’s palate with a bright, smooth and unexpectedly long finish. The unique offering will be available at the price of an Indian whisky and the flavourful palate will be well suited to both beginners and connoisseurs alike. There will be two variants of the product - Oaksmith® and Oaksmith® Gold - which will launch on 19th December 2019 in the state of Maharashtra, followed by the rest of the country in due course. Oaksmith® Gold will be priced in the range of INR 800 to INR 1300, while Oaksmith® will be priced in the range of INR 600 to INR 900 depending upon the state of launch. Both the variants will be premium in their respective categories due to the international quality of blend and craftsmanship they offer.
A relentless quest for perfection and commitment to using only the highest- quality ingredients encapsulates Suntory’s philosophy to create the finest spirit possible. Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender at Suntory, said, "My travels across the world have helped me understand and appreciate sophisticated flavour profiles. Blending spirits is about creating a harmonious flavour by weaving culture and tradition along with one’s own form of self-expression. This is an art in itself and I am very grateful that people globally have appreciated the quality and artistry of Hibiki® and Yamazaki®, and hopefully now, Oaksmith®.” On Oaksmith®, he added, “While making this blend, I wanted to ensure that it resonates specifically well with the Indian audience while being truly international in its spirit. I travelled across the country to understand the different food cultures and flavours. Eventually what I saw, heard and tasted, helped me explore a variety of flavour profiles and finalize this harmonious blend which has the best of America, Scotland and Japanese craftsmanship. I am extremely proud as the final product completely reimagines what the future of Indian whisky can be.”
On the rising popularity of gin in India, George Kumekawa, Representative, The House of Suntory, said, “In recent years, we have noticed a strong trend among Indians to opt for premium and craft gin as their spirit of choice as it has a softer flavour profile which is easier on the throat and refreshing in its appeal - perfect for brunches and refreshment occasions. With the introduction of Roku® gin in India, we are looking to further build the market for both gin as well as craft spirits to help enthusiasts discover new tastes and experiences.”

About Suntory
Suntory was established in 1899 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Since 1923, as the pioneer of Japanese whisky, Suntory Whisky has been renowned for its House of Master Blenders and for their Art of Blending. The founding father of Japanese whisky, Shinjiro Torii, built Japan’s first malt whisky distillery in Yamazaki. Nestled in the outskirts of Kyoto, this region was the birthplace of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and is known for the purity of its waters. Torii dreamt of creating an authentically Japanese whisky by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to that of Scotland, thereby cultivating unique conditions for maturation. In 1972, Torii’s son Keizo Saji, Suntory’s second master blender, built the Chita distillery near Nagoya to produce more of their own high-quality grain whiskies. In 1973, Saji founded the Hakushu distillery amidst the deep forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake in the Japanese Southern Alps with the goal of producing malt whiskies distinct from those made at Yamazaki. Its high altitude and lush environment are what differentiates Hakushu from other distilleries.
The House of Suntory portfolio includes two single malt whiskies: Yamazaki – the pioneer of Japanese Single Malts, multi-layered and profound, and Hakushu – verdant, fresh, and delicately smoky; a single grain whisky: Chita - sublimely smooth, versatile and complex; and two blends: the noble blend, Hibiki – Japan’s most highly awarded blended whisky, and Suntory Whisky Toki – ideal for Japanese highballs.
The introduction of Roku Japanese Gin and Haku Japanese Vodka adds two premium white spirits created from Japanese ingredients by the master artisans at The House of Suntory to the collection. Roku Gin and Haku Vodka embody Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii’s philosophy of monozukuri craftsmanship: a relentless pursuit of perfection, meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality. February 17, 2020 (CLERMONT, KY) – The James B. Beam Distilling Co. today celebrated the filling of its 16 millionth barrel of Bourbon since Prohibition and the beginning of a year honoring the brand’s 225th anniversary. The milestone barrel was filled and sealed by family distillers Fred Noe, 7th Generation Master Distiller, and his son Freddie Noe, 8th Generation Beam Distiller, in Clermont, Kentucky.
It’s humbling that we get to fill our 16 millionth barrel as we kick off our 225th anniversary. This milestone speaks to our eight-generation commitment to never compromising on quality and always staying true to our roots,” said Fred Noe, 7th Generation Master Distiller, James B. Beam Distilling Co. “Celebrating 225 years and looking back at my family’s story in Kentucky, we’re not raising a glass to our past but for the 225 years to come! I’m looking forward to the next chapter of bringing more people together over great Bourbon for another 225 years.
The Beam family has always been committed to quality; making Bourbon the Beam way, not just quickly; and staying true to its deep roots. This milestone underscores the James B. Beam Distilling Co.’s steadfast commitment to family, leadership and quality. Most recently the company committed to invest more than $60 million in Clermont to build the Fred B. Noe Craft Distillery and create a new visitor experience that encompasses the entire family of brands, from Jim Beam to Knob Creek, Booker’s, Baker’s and Basil Hayden’s, to the next generation brands like Little Book and Legent.
“Jim Beam is a Kentucky brand recognized around the world – a key reason Kentucky just became the nation’s leading exporter of whiskey,” said Governor Andy Beshear. “This is an exciting time for Beam and for one of Kentucky’s signature industries. Thank you to the Noe family for inviting me to participate in this historic day and for their commitment to Clermont, to Kentucky and to good Bourbon.”
As part of its focus on the future, the James B. Beam Distilling Co. has established a Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest to protect the pristine limestone water that give its Bourbons their incredible flavor. The company has also donated $5 million to the University of Kentucky to establish the James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits to educate the Bourbon industry’s next generation, and research ways to distill more efficiently, and more sustainably.
“This is an incredible time to be in the Bourbon industry, especially given the category’s global growth and continued innovation changing the landscape,” said Malini Patel, Managing Director, James B. Beam Distilling Co. “Since the James B. Beam Distilling Co. makes nearly half of the Bourbon produced in the state of Kentucky, we don’t take our leadership position lightly. People from Tokyo to Frankfurt, from Moscow to Sydney are embracing Bourbon and we’re dedicated to doing our part to continue growing this incredible industry for another 225 years to come.”
There are many ways to experience the James B. Beam Distilling Co. firsthand. Take a tour of the American Stillhouse and see the 16 millionth barrel on display in Warehouse Two. Events, signature cocktails, and tastings are also available at our distillery in Clermont, Kentucky or stop into the Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse in Louisville for a tasting or an expertly crafted cocktail.
