The 10-Year Commemorative Bottle Series will Support Kentucky Nonprofits; Kentucky Harvest, Art Center of the Bluegrass & Blue Grass Farms Charities Named First
LEXINGTON, KY – Thursday, April 11th 2024 – Keeneland Race Course and Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Bourbon today announced a new chapter in their longstanding partnership with the launch of “Greats of the Gate,” a 10-year commemorative bottle series celebrating Thoroughbred racing’s most iconic horses – featuring a different horse each year.
Arriving this year in October exclusively at select Kentucky retailers, the inaugural bottle will honor the legendary Lexington-foaled Man o' War, who competed from 1919 to 1920, winning 20 of 21 races, including the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, while establishing seven track records for speed over various distances.
“Keeneland and Maker’s Mark have a rich history of working hand-in-hand to support organizations making an impact in Kentucky,” said Rob Samuels, Managing Director of Maker’s Mark and eighth-generation whisky maker. “We’re honored to partner each year in such a meaningful way, dating back to when Keeneland was our first customer serving Maker’s Mark in the 1950s and setting the stage for decades of collaboration to follow.”
The limited-editon bottle features an illustration by Kentucky artist Tyler Robertson with artwork wrapping around the bottle in yellow and black - the racing colors for Man o’ War. The horse is shown on both sides of the bottle in streaks of yellow to connote him coming around the final turn and heading down the stretch to the finish. The bottle’s crown will be dipped in bright yellow wax and topped with a black silk ribbon. This bottle will be available in October exclusively at select Kentucky retailers that sell Maker’s Mark.
Proceeds from each year’s “Greats of the Gate” bottle will benefit nonprofits that support Kentucky culture, including the horseracing industry, hospitality and the arts. Over the course of the 10 years, Keeneland and Maker’s Mark are committed to raising $4 million for various Kentucky nonprofit organizations through this bottle series.
“Keeneland is proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Maker’s Mark to benefit both the Thoroughbred industry and our local communities,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland and Maker’s Mark share a mission of service and philanthropy, and the commemorative bottles have been a fun way to engage our fans and support deserving organizations through the years.”
For the first three years of the 10-year series, the “Greats of the Gate” bottle will support Kentucky Harvest, Art Center of the Bluegrass and Blue Grass Farms Charities. The Art Center of the Bluegrass connects people to art, culture, and creativity through exhibits, hands on art making, arts appreciation, and cultural experiences, while the mission of Kentucky Harvest is to end local hunger by connecting with food donors and engaging volunteers to rescue excess food and move it from those who have it to those in need.
Blue Grass Farms Charities (BGFC), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, provides health and human services to those who work in the Central Kentucky Thoroughbred Industry, including a much-needed food assistance program. Proceeds from the Man o’ War bottle will support construction of a new food pantry located at The Thoroughbred Center (TTC) on Paris Pike, Keeneland’s year-round training facility, making it accessible to the greatest number of industry workers. BGFC continues to serve Fayette, Bourbon, Woodford, Scott and Jessamine area farms and facilities.

About Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Bourbon
In 1953, in Loretto, Ky., Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste. Bill Samuels, Sr., transformed bourbon from a "commodity" into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker's Mark continues to make its bourbon the same way. In recent years, Maker's Mark has introduced thoughtful, super-premium innovations to its portfolio, including Maker's Mark 46, Maker's Mark Cask Strength, Maker’s Mark Cellar-Aged, and Maker's Mark Private Selection, the brand's custom barrel program. Scotland, UK (11 April 2024) - Beam Suntory and Supercritical Solutions Ltd (Supercritical) are celebrating a milestone moment for the WhiskHy project as trials prove that hydrogen is a viable fuel source for direct-fired distillation. The successful trial is a world-first achievement in hydrogen distilling for whisky production .
In 2021, the WhiskHy project received green innovation project funding from the UK government to carry out feasibility studies for green hydrogen-based decarbonisation technology at Beam Suntory-owned distilleries. The funding was awarded through the Green Distilleries competition, which forms part of the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero’s ‘Net Zero Innovation Portfolio’, with the project having made considerable advancements towards zero emission distilling at an industrial scale.
As part of its Proof Positive sustainability strategy, Beam Suntory is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2040, and pursuing innovative green technology across its global distilleries to do so. This ambition provided a unique opportunity to partner with Suntory’s Yamazaki team in Japan to carry out the trial at its pilot distillery, which is specifically designed to carry out such innovative research and development.
The world-first successful trial used 100% hydrogen to directly heat the still . A part of the distilled spirit will be casked in Scotland at the Glen Garioch distillery, where it will be quality assessed as it matures. The Glen Garioch distillery recently underwent a £6 million renovation project to reinstate traditional malting floors and a direct-fired still.
‘Direct-firing’ is regarded as a traditional method of distilling, by which a direct flame is used rather than an indirect heating by steam coils. This process is key to the WhiskHy project, as it offers the potential to cut carbon emissions by up to 100% if using green hydrogen, thus rendering the process net-zero. Through associated maillard reactions, direct-firing can also enhance spirit quality and depth of character, as evidenced at the Glen Garioch distillery.
As part of Project WhiskHy, Supercritical has advanced its proprietary technology, the first ever ultra-efficient, high pressure electrolyser, which would enable a distillery to produce and store hydrogen on site, powered by local renewable power sources. The development of Supercritical’s electrolyser recently reached a milestone of its own: the establishment of its green hydrogen demonstrator in northeast England, an essential step in the journey to commercial scale deployment.
Matt Bird, CEO, Supercritical comments: “The WhiskHy project at Beam Suntory's renowned Yamazaki distillery has been a testament to the engineering prowess and dedication to net zero innovation within the group. This landmark trial not only marks a significant stride in hydrogen fuel advancement but also sets the stage for ongoing progress and collaboration. Our partnership with Beam Suntory is poised to remove the premium of green hydrogen, leveraging our cutting-edge technology for a sustainable future.”
Alistair Longwell, Head of Distilling and Environment, Beam Suntory, adds: “As a company, we are intent on pushing the boundaries of green innovation. We have an ambition to achieve net zero emissions across our entire value chain by 2040, and it is through unique collaborative projects such as WhiskHy that we will get there. We are thrilled to have achieved this new milestone and look forward to continuing our progress with Supercritical as we pursue a more sustainable, resilient future for our industry.”
Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, comments: “After visiting Supercritical last year and seeing their exciting technologies first-hand, I am thrilled they have reached this new milestone alongside Beam Suntory – with the potential to kickstart a new clean green whisky industry. By backing the project with £2.9 million in government support, we are helping businesses seize the opportunities of hydrogen and cut their emissions on the journey to net zero.”
Katsunori Kurihara, COO of Spirits, Wine Development & Production Division at Suntory Spirits Ltd, adds: “Ever since we began whisky making at the Yamazaki Distillery in 1923, we have been striving to craft with a relentless pursuit of perfection and persistent innovation. The whisky business embodies Suntory’s philosophy ‘to inspire the brilliance of life by creating rich experiences for people, in harmony with nature’. To coexist with people and nature, and to aspire to produce Suntory Whisky beloved by all, we will work towards a net zero goal while maintaining the quality craftsmanship of our whiskies.”

A.Overholt pays homage to its heritage with a fully balanced, robust and complex American Rye available nationwide today
Clermont, Kentucky (April 10, 2024) – Today, Overholt™, the longest-standing American whiskey brand maintained continuously since 1810, announced its newest release, A.Overholt shepherding the newest evolution of Pennsylvania Rye imbued with heritage and legacy. Reintroducing consumers to one of the first style of American whiskey, Overholt™ is reclaiming its stature as one of the most the most iconic rye whiskey brand by redefining the breadth and future of rye. A. Overholt uses the same mashbill Overholt™ founder, Abraham Overholt used in 1810 – 80% rye grain and 20% soft malted barley – creating a fully warm yet deep spice, similar to Rye Whiskey from the 1800’s.
re
Since inception, Overholt™ has forged forward through every era, including being one of the only spirits brands to survive prohibition, with the same clarity and tenacity Abraham Overholt had when crafting in 1810. Today, Freddie Noe, 8th generation Master Distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery at The James B. Beam Distilling Co. champions the legacy propelling the brand forward through the rebirth of this whiskey’s iconic legacy liquid, A. Overholt - Pennsylvania born, Kentucky made.
“With over 200 years of exceptional craftmanship, Overholt™ is engrained in American history with its industrial roots and as a spirit that has set the industry standard since inception.” said Freddie Noe. “The newest launch of A. Overholt is the result of highly crafted whiskey, informed and inspired by generational expertise, and I’m honored to steward this brand forward while paying homage to its past and our shared commitment to American Whiskey innovation.”
The Overholt brand is known as A Keystone of American Rye Whiskey, because of the shared qualities between Abe and The Keystone State itself: hard work, steely grit, big ideas, firm conviction, and its long-standing industrious spirit. It’s this conviction that drove Abraham Overholt forward – through wars, prohibition, cultural strife, and plenty of double shifts. Its indomitable spirit has remained resilient despite various changes in ownership and production throughout the years, including a change in hands to Abraham’s own grandson, American industrialist Henry Clay Frick. Today, the Pennsylvania-born whiskey of the Industrial Revolution is produced in Clermont, Kentucky at the James B. Beam Distilling Co., where the rich tradition of American production lives on.
A. Overholt joins the ranks of this beloved, and trade favorite portfolio currently consisting of Old Overholt 4YO, Old Overholt 4YO Bottled in Bond, and Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength. Enjoy A.Overholt neat or on the rocks or in a cocktail such as the Perfect Manhattan or Scofflaw to experience the boldness and versatility of the newest expression. A. Overholt will be available nationwide across the U.S., in-store and find a bottle near you on OverholtRye.com bottle locator, beginning April 2024. For real-time information about A. Suntory confirms all its exported Japanese Whiskies will meet the official designation established by the JSLMA. The founding house of Japanese Whisky and pioneering force within the industry says the move will safeguard the reputation of the Japanese Whisky category and secure confidence among consumers and trade.
New York, NY, April 4: The House of Suntory welcomes the voluntary designation of ‘Japanese Whisky’ established by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) which will usher in a new era of transparency within the industry that champions the culture and craftsmanship that have vaulted Japanese Whisky to the top of the whisky world.
In 2021, JSLMA announced a new set of standards to curb the spread of products misleadingly labelled as ‘Japanese Whisky.’ Labelling standards were enacted on April 1, 2021, with a three-year transition period for members of the association to comply. This action was an important first step toward protecting authentic Japanese Whisky, which has grown into one of the most prestigious spirits categories in the world.
As the founding house and pioneer of Japanese Whisky, The House of Suntory confirmed that it will continue to take a leadership role in protecting and increasing awareness for the category through ongoing consumer and trade education initiatives about what properly constitutes a Japanese Whisky.
Since the establishment of the Yamazaki Distillery — Japan’s oldest malt whisky distillery — in 1923, The House of Suntory has been crafting award-winning spirits such as Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Hibiki whiskies and played a pivotal role in elevating the category to new heights. The House of Suntory is proud to confirm that all exported Suntory Japanese Whisky products are 100% distilled, matured, and bottled in Japan and compliant with the new production and labelling standards. The brands include The Yamazaki Single Malt Japanese Whisky, The Hakushu Single Malt Japanese Whisky, The Chita Single Grain Japanese Whisky, Hibiki Blended Japanese Whisky, Toki Blended Japanese Whisky, and Suntory Whisky “Kakubin” Blended Japanese Whisky.
“As a pioneer and leading company dedicated to authenticity, we believe the designation will help uphold the integrity of and further vitalize the category. This is a milestone not just for Suntory, but for our entire industry, as well as being a great day for whisky lovers globally,” shares the President of The House of Suntory, Masaki Morimoto. “Suntory is proud to be one of the producers for whom all of their officially exported whiskies available are 100% compliant. Tradition, quality, and innovation are at the heart of everything we do, and we are proud to continue showcasing these through artful distilling and blending.”
With its rapidly growing popularity, a broad range of whiskies have come to market without an agreed definition of Japanese Whisky, which has led to uncertainty among whisky drinkers about the provenance of some of the spirits they enjoy. Respected international competitions are already adhering to the new JSLMA standard with the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and International Spirits Challenge aligning their definitions for Japanese Whisky.
The House of Suntory believes that these guidelines preserve the creative liberties that have allowed Japanese Whisky distillers to innovate and continuously improve their offerings, while ensuring that all whiskies labelled Japanese Whisky are produced there to safeguard the integrity of the category.
To achieve the designation of Japanese Whisky, a brand must uphold the following:
Water:
Water used in production must be extracted in Japan.
Production:
Saccharification, fermentation, and distillation must be carried out at a distillery in Japan.
Distillation:
Must be distilled to less than 95% ABV.
Aging:
Spirits must be aged in wooden casks (of no more than 700 litres) in Japan for a minimum of three years.
Packaging:
Bottling must take place in Japan.
Strength:
Bottled spirit must be at least 40% ABV.
Coloring:
Plain caramel coloring (E150) can be used.
Suntory Whisky brands that comply with the Japanese Whisky labelling standards are the following:
The Yamazaki Single Malt Japanese Whisky *
The Hakushu Single Malt Japanese Whisky *
The Chita Single Grain Japanese Whisky *
Hibiki Blended Japanese Whisky *
Toki Blended Japanese Whisky *
Suntory Whisky “Kakubin” Blended Japanese Whisky *

“As a leader responsible for over 6,000 employees globally, I lead with my heart. But to be honest, I didn’t expect my career to go into Human Resources. I was asked to step in as Chief Human Resources Officer in 2014, just as Suntory Holdings had acquired Beam. I struggled with this career decision at first. Up until that point, my career had always been focused on corporate communications, public relations, advertising and brand development, so HR would be a new world to me. However, I’m always up for a good challenge, and I’m a firm believer that when a door opens you need to seize the opportunity. Once I took on the role, I never looked back.
I had much to learn as I stepped into this executive role, and I also had to find ways to juggle work and home life as a wife and mom to three children. To skill up, I quickly expanded my network and went back to school, attending an executive HR management course at the University of Michigan. As my children have gotten older, they’ve expressed how I’ve been a role model for them – being able to have a successful family, marriage and career. I owe a great deal of that success to the support of my incredible husband, Kurt, of 25 years and the trusting relationships I’ve formed with my colleagues over the last 15 years.
My personal experience as a working parent is the reason I’ve passionately championed for our people as the head of our People, Culture and Communications team. One of my proudest accomplishments was rolling out our global parental leave policy, which includes six months paid leave for our primary care givers. Most companies don't offer anything close to that, especially in the US, and I love that this has made such a huge difference for our families. I can't even begin to tell you the amazing notes I get from some of our parents who have tapped into the parental benefits that we offer. It lets me know we’re doing business the right way.
I really care about people, and when people work for us, I want that experience to be the best it can be for them. I want them to feel like they're in a place that truly supports them in both life and work. I want them to feel they can be their true, authentic selves every day.
As I step into my next personal chapter and retire from the company effective April 1, I’ll be cheering from the sidelines. I’m beyond grateful and humbled for this opportunity to lead at such an incredible time of transformation for this company. If I could leave my leaders with one last piece of advice, I would urge them to lead with intentionality, ensuring our amazing company culture continues to thrive. I know the company is in great hands, and I’m excited to see what my successor, Sarah Langley, will achieve as she brings the best of her Suntory experience to our people and our business around the world.”
Beam Suntory announces funding and coordination of innovative restoration project in partnership with Northern Peat & Moss as part of its Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme
SCOTLAND, UK (26 March 2024) – Beam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, today announces a long-term project to restore peatland on Craigculter Moss, in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, in partnership with Northern Peat & Moss. The project will use novel techniques to restore and replenish the peat bog, improving resilience to climate change, enhancing biodiversity and re-establishing nature-supporting habitats.
Initial restoration groundworks are already underway at the 60-hectare site in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Beam Suntory will fully fund the approximately £100,000 restoration project.
The restoration is part of the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme, a joint investment of over $4 million by Beam Suntory and its parent company, Suntory Holdings, into the conservation and restoration of peatlands. While the Scotch Whisky industry is only responsible for a very modest percentage of Scotland’s peat use, Beam Suntory is committed to working in partnership with different site owners and conservationists to implement novel restoration techniques that will replenish any level of degraded peatland.
Craigculter is a heavily degraded peat moss, having historically been used to harvest peat for different industries, such as for fuel. Beam Suntory will demonstrate novel techniques on the moss to restore peat below the ‘standard’ threshold level, and in some areas, to reintroduce a functioning wetland on bare substrate.
Restoration will provide considerable benefits for carbon sequestration and increase water retention and distribution across the site to both reduce the rate of erosion and re-establish vegetation to the point where peat will once again accumulate naturally. This in turn will reduce the risk of local and regional flooding and restore the biodiversity and wildlife of this natural habitat.
As part of the project’s commitment to improve education and awareness about the importance of peat and biodiversity, Beam Suntory will facilitate knowledge-sharing with the wider Scotch Whisky industry and other research and conservationist groups to encourage further restoration and innovation.
Alistair Longwell, Head of Distillation & Environment, Beam Suntory, comments: “We are very proud of the progress we’ve made since launching the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme three years ago, with 206 hectares restored and 435 hectares in planning stages. This project at Craigculter marks an important step in our industry-wide commitment to restoring Scotland’s peatlands, proving that by implementing novel methods, we can push the boundaries of restoration and show that even historically degraded land can be replenished to a thriving natural habitat.”
Robbie Millar, President of Global Whisky and Prestige, Beam Suntory, adds: “Our global sustainability strategy, Proof Positive, lays out our commitment to making a positive impact on the environments and communities in which we operate. By collaborating with other organisations, landowners and expert conservationists, we can implement real change for these crucial watersheds, and we look forward to sharing our results and learnings with others as we progress the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme.”
Harumichi Seta, General Manager, Sustainability Management Division, Suntory Holdings, comments: “As a company sustained by the gifts of nature and water, we are dedicated to replenishing and protecting the natural wetlands across Scotland that play an indispensable role in water purification and biodiversity. We are steadfast in our long-term restoration targets and hope to bring many more partners on the journey with us, to maximise our collective positive impact on nature and society.”

About Peatland Water Sanctuary™
The Peatland Water Sanctuary™ is a large-scale series of peatland restoration and watershed conservation projects in Scotland launched in 2021 by Beam Suntory and its parent company, Suntory Holdings. Through PWS™, the companies have committed to invest more than $4 million to the restoration and conservation of 1,300 hectares of peatlands by 2030, enough to produce the same amount of peat that Beam Suntory uses to make its peated whiskies on an ongoing basis. Beyond this, there is a longer-term aim to restore sufficient peatlands by 2040 to equate twice what Beam Suntory uses.
The PWS™ programme began with work to restore and conserve peatland near the Ardmore distillery in November 2021 in partnership with the James Hutton Institute and Forestry & Land Scotland. Beam Suntory has also partnered with the RSPB Scotland to regenerate peatland at the Airds Moss reserve in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Across its projects, Beam Suntory has already restored 206 hectares of peatland, with a further 435 hectares in active planning stages.
The PWS™ programme aligns with the Suntory Group Sustainability Vision and Beam Suntory’s ambitious Proof Positive sustainability strategy, as well as the Scotch Whisky Association’s environmental commitments.
