Glasgow, Scotland – October 3, 2013 – Beam Inc. (NYSE: BEAM), a leading global premium spirits company, today announced the opening of three new Scotch whisky maturation warehouses at Westthorn, Glasgow. The announcement coincided with the site’s 60th anniversary.
The expanded warehouse site increases holding capacity for Beam’s aging Scotch Whisky by nearly 20 percent. Beam’s £3 million investment in the expansion project will help the company meet growing worldwide consumer demand and support future growth for its premium Scotch Whisky portfolio, which includes Teacher’s, Laphroaig and Ardmore.
“This increase in warehouse capacity will help us meet future demand for our premium Scotch Whisky brands in both developing and emerging markets,” said Albert Baladi, president EMEA, at the dedication ceremony. “We see a very bright future for Teacher’s, Laphroaig and Ardmore, and we’re making appropriate investments to support their growth.” Teacher’s is one of the world’s leading blended Scotch whiskies with particularly strong market positions in India and Brazil, and Laphroaig is the world’s #1 Islay malt whisky.
“As a highly efficient site, located within a meander of the River Clyde, Westthorn is ideally suited for the gentle maturation of the malt and grain whiskies that give Teacher’s its unique flavour,” said Douglas Reid, director Scotch & Irish Whisky Operations for Beam. “These three new warehouses will allow us to age 75,000 more casks of Scotch at once.”
The original site opened in 1953 after being converted from the original Westthorn dairy farm. Since that time, millions of cases of Scotch Whisky have been aged to perfection at the site and shipped around the world.
Beam’s investment in the three new Scotch aging warehouses at Westthorn coincides with its investment to increase capacity of its Bourbon portfolio, produced at the Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark distilleries in Kentucky.
