How do you Unleash your Spirit?
Name: The history of Japanese whisky started more than 90 years ago with a dream of one young man. His name was Shinjiro Torii, a founder of Suntory. In 1923, Shinjiro started building the first whisky distillery in Japan in Yamazaki. Many people around him opposed to the decision, but he had a firm conviction of success and went forward the business with “Yatte Minahare” spirit.
In 1990’s when I assigned to export and market Suntory’s whiskies outside of Japan, the first response was unfavorable. The FAQs was “Japanese whisky? Never heard it. Is it something like Japanese sake (rice wines)?” The Japan team including myself continued the efforts by telling the history, heritage and quality with the “Yatte Minahare” spirit, but the difficult situation lasted long.
Since the establishment of Beam Suntory, the popularity of Japanese whiskies has exploded, thanks to the great efforts, commitment and professionalship of our Beam Suntory team! The legacy two companies were successfully merged as both had a common company value. “Unleash Your Spirit” is an English equivalent of the “Yatte Minahare” spirit.
