Clarkson Hine is Senior Vice President – Corporate Communications & Public Affairs at Beam Suntory, the world’s third largest premium spirits company. He is responsible for the company’s strategic communications programs, including external communications, internal communications and corporate social responsibility. He also leads the company’s public affairs/government relations team based in Washington and Europe.
From October 2011 through April 2014, Hine held the same position with Beam Inc. prior to its acquisition by Suntory Holdings. Hine previously was Vice President – Corporate Communications & Public Affairs at Fortune Brands, the predecessor company to Beam. Before joining Fortune Brands as Director of Communications in August of 1998, Hine practiced strategic communications and media relations in Washington, DC.
From 1990 to 1997, Hine served in senior communications positions on the Senate Leadership, presidential campaign and post-election staffs of Senator Bob Dole. For three years, he was Press Secretary during Dole’s high-profile tenure as both Minority and Majority Leader of the United States Senate. Upon Dole’s departure from the Senate, Hine served as Deputy Communications Director for the Dole for President campaign and as the senator’s post-campaign media advisor. From 1997 to 1998, Hine was Senior Vice President for Public Affairs at SDI, a Washington-based public relations firm.
Hine serves on the board of directors of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). He is also a member of The Seminar Committee and the Arthur W. Page Society, two leading professional organizations.
A native of New York City, Hine is a cum laude graduate of Cornell University. He and his wife, Laura, have twin sons and a daughter, and reside in Wilmette, IL.
What is your leadership philosophy?
Clarkson: Lead by example.
What was your first job?
Clarkson: I mowed lawns during the summer.
What do you like to do with your free time outside of work? Hobbies etc.
Clarkson: Golf. And golf. Did I mention golf?
What’s your Beam drink of choice?
Clarkson: Knob Creek on the rocks.
If you could have drinks with any person (living or dead) who would you choose?
Clarkson: My wife, preferably at a beach bar.
How do you Unleash your Spirit?
Name: I joined Fortune Brands, the predecessor company of Beam Suntory, 18 years ago, and over that time I’ve seen this business grow up and transform itself into a global leader. Sometimes people ask me why I’ve stayed so long with one company. For me, it comes down to three things: a dynamic industry with enduring growth prospects, amazing brands with unmatched heritage, and most importantly, great people determined to win. It’s inspiring to see how our teams execute our strategy, and I learn from them every day.
So I unleash my spirit by telling the stories of our brands, people and company to all our stakeholders – internally, externally, authentically and passionately. It’s been an incredible journey helping to reinvent this company, create something new, and forge a common culture united by similar core values. Beam Suntory has built tremendous reputational strength, and I look forward to helping bring to life the next chapter in our company’s proud history. I have a feeling it’s going to be a good one!
