What is your leadership philosophy?

David: Effective leadership can come in many forms, but I believe success always depends on strong engagement and collaboration with stakeholders, careful listening, and clear communication of direction and priorities. These activities give the best chance of achieving alignment with a shared vision to inspire commitment and ownership of actions. However, leadership is only one role within a team -- collective strength of the team effort is what can drive extraordinary results.

What was your first job?

David: My first proper job was as a project engineer for ICI, which, at that time, was the largest chemical company in the UK. As a new graduate, I learned very quickly how little I really knew outside of my core Engineering discipline, and was very fortunate that the company had an excellent graduate development program, with training on leadership, team working, general management and business acumen as well as structured core professional development.

What do you like to do with your free time outside of work? Hobbies etc.

David: I like the outdoors. I’ve been a keen skier for many years, so I welcome the snow! In warmer months I enjoy mountain biking and walking. I also enjoy time socializing with family and friends.

What’s your Beam drink of choice?

David: That’s a hard one for someone who has had the privilege of working with the teams at all of our distilleries! I find that each of our brands tastes even better when savored with the team at the source distillery. Nothing beats Jim Beam Black with ginger ale at the Knob Creek house or sipping a 10yr. Laphroaig on the beach at the distillery.

If you could have drinks with any person (living or dead) who would you choose?

David: Ernest Shackleton. As an explorer he would have some amazing stories to tell and none more so than the account of his epic 1914 attempt to cross the Antarctic over land. His courage to embark on such an ambitious expedition, then his determination and leadership in the face of failure and overwhelming odds to get every single one of his men back safely is truly inspiring.
